Spreading God's glory from our neighbors to the nations!

Mission Trip News

Thursday Evening, April 6th

A final greeting from Louisiana!

My apologies for the brief update yesterday. A little bit about yesterday... like I said, we tore down a shed for Mrs. Purvis who is recently widowed. The guys (and Mindy) got to play with the BobCat and Kabota. They had a lot of fun! Check out the picture!!

Yesterday afternoon, we drove over to New Orleans. You cannot imagine the devastation on the other side of the lake. The homes that are totally demolished go on and on forever. It is something that you would have to see to understand. Words cannot describe what it is like. We ate dinner in the French Quarter and did a bit of sight seeing. It was a much needed break from all the work.

Today we gutted a house that was flooded when the levees broke. It was a hard day all around. First we had to take all of the contents of the house out to the curb. That is everything. It was like moving without the packing. After the contents were removed, we began taking out the drywall. We were all so tired when we finished! The homeowners came by after we got everything to the curb. They helped us take down the drywall. They were so appreciative. Please pray for Carol & Jerry.

We are heading back tomorrow. Please pray that we will have a safe trip. We miss you all, and we will see you Sunday!

Thursday Morning, April 6th

Don't have much time right now. We got in really late last night and are up really early this morning. Yesterday we demolished a shed for an elderly widow, Mrs. Purvis. Pray for her, she doesn't have anyone to really help her do things. There is a neighbor that helps her out, but she has no family in the area.

Last night we toured New Orleans. I thought it was bad where we are staying... words cannot describe what it is like over the lake. I will send pictures tonight if I can...

We are off to muck out a house today.

Hello again from Louisiana!

Today we worked on the house of Hope Church's Sunday School Teacher, Bruce. Bruce is a professor at a local community college, and a very nice guy! His house was in need of siding. He did not have anyone to help him put it on towards the top because his wife and daughter would not get on the scaffolding. The guy's mission today was to put siding on Bruce's house. Unfortunately, they did not get as much done as they would have liked, but they did make considerable progress.

While the guys worked on the siding, the girls tore down a fence that that Katrina blew part way down. It was what Bro. Lane called "farmer's work".

I only wish we could have done more. I thought that Bruce's wife was going to cry over just the little we were able to do. It was a real blessing to be able to help out this very sweet family.

Bruce's property is beautiful. He has tons of animals. We took more pictures of animals today than we did people. We even got a picture of a pink cat!

We can't wait to see what God has in store for us tomorrow!

Monday, April 3rd

We all got such a blessing today!

The guys fixed part of a roof for a family who's home was hit by a couple trees during Katrina. (Actually, it's hard to find a home that wasn't hit by a tree in Katrina. ) The family actually lived in New Orleans prior to the hurricane. They stayed through the storm, and were fine.... until the levees broke. It was the flooding that destroyed their home. They were lucky that they had an old piece of property with a house here in Waldheim. There were 3 people living in the house. A brother and sister and their elderly mother. The sister was actually swept away by the flood waters and grabbed hold of a stop sign until her brother could come and rescue her. They are a very nice family. Please pray for Arthur and his family.

So what did the girls do while the guys were on the roof? We stacked wood from a tree that had been cut up, raked the front yard, and cleaned up the shingles that came off of the roof. We were working hard too!

It is about 6pm at the time of the email. Us gals are back "home" fixing supper. The guys have gone to put up a new pump house for another family. It is such a blessing to be able to do things to help these people, and they appreciate it so much. Please pray that our strength holds out and everyone stays healthy! Praise God for this wonderful opportunity!

Sunday, April 2nd

Greetings from Covington, LA!

We have had a wonderful day of worship and fellowship today!

We arrived late last night around 11:30pm Eastern Time. Bro. Lane met us and showed us around the grounds, and we settled in for a good night's sleep.

This morning, we had Sunday School and worship with Hope Church. It was a great time of worship.

After church, Bro. Lane took us to a local seafood restaurant where we had some great Cajun food. After lunch, we toured the area surrounding the church and talked about some potential projects. It is hard to explain the area... it looks like the thickest forest you have ever seen, with over half of the trees uprooted. We have been told that the area looks good compared to what it was. It is one thing to hear about the devastation on the news, it is totally different to sit in a room full of people who have all lost homes, family, etc.

We have not decided yet which projects we will tackle this week, we feel so inadequate compared to what needs to be done. Pray for us, and pray for the people of this area.

I will try to update our work later in the week, but for now we are here and we are safe.
